Preliminary Note On White Teeth
Being bombarded with advertisements and shiny teeth all over the place people will subconsciously feel the urge to achieve the same. When you look into the mirror in the morning you may realize that your teeth are not as white as you wish them to be.
Reasons for teeth being yellow
Several factors can play a role in making your teeth yellow including genetics, what you drink and eat, and of course your oral hygiene.
Understanding how a tooth is made up may help to understand more about its color. The outer layer in the enamel, which is the white covering that you need to chew and which protects the layers below. Below is the dentin that has a yellow color. It supports the enamel and is also a hard material. Then you have the pulp which is contains the blood vessels and finally the cementum, which is covering the root of the tooth. Notice the gum that is around the tooth. A healthy gum is important to protect the tooth from bacteria that can deteriorate the dental neck.
Certain drinks like coke and coffee tend to stain the enamel of your teeth due to their “dark nature”. Also smoking has an effect on your teeth, so that you may consider to stop smoking if you want to keep your teeth white.
Lack of oral hygiene and poor selection of food intake can cause the enamel to weaken and finally break, thus uncovering the dentin beneath it. So in order to avoid this, you have to keep your enamel clean and strong.
Shiny white teeth – Ideal Of Beauty vs. Oral Hygiene
Having white teeth certainly is a sign that your teeth are healthy. And how white your teeth can become naturally depends on each individual. But I also believe that you easily can overdo it and doing more harm than good. So always ask yourself, why you think you need to have white teeth and how to get there in a reasonable way?
For me, I want to have clean and healthy teeth with my teeth being naturally white. That’s it. If you want more than that, I cannot promise you that the tips provided below will be sufficient, but at least they will be a very good start. If this is still not enough, you probably have to go to your dentist and ask for advice and do professional whitening. After that continue with the tips provided and you will see that your teeth will stay white and healthy much longer.
Don’t believe everything you see on TV
One should bear in mind that we do not always see the truth and that we are being lied many times when it comes to the media, movies and advertisements in general. Who tells you that what you see is the truth? What about Photoshop and reworked photos and movies? Who tells you that the “stars” don’t use some sort of extra whitener the lasts just for some time or maybe is not natural or healthy?
So always keep in mind that simplicity is king. The more natural something is the more likely it is that it is also sustainable for your body and for your purse after all. Or how often are you willing to spend huge sums for the dentist to whiten your teeth? If you do it frequently then you probably wouldn’t read this article. Is it possible that some of the treatments abrade the enamel of the teeth and thus providing possible future streams of income for your dentist?
I don’t say that it is bad to go to the dentist and I strongly recommendgoing there if you feel you have to. But just try to stop for a moment and think about it. If there would be a treatment that will help you to never go to the dentist again, do you thing dentists would like that treatment? Do you think that big pharma will ever invent something that heals you forever? How would they make money then?
Bearing this in mind you will often hear some experts who do not believe in the simple treatments or claim that there is no scientific evidence. Here is my advice, try it out for yourself and see if the simple treatments “from good ol’ grandma” help you or not. If it works for you then you don’t need any studies. On the other hand, don’t believe everything that other people tell you. Make your own research.
Most important is to question everything and to take back responsibility for your life. You are the only one who can do that. But now, let’s see how you can keep your teeth white. I believe that nature has everything we need; we just need to open our eyes, listen to our hearts and use some common sense.
So at the end of the day, you have to decide how white it has to be for yourself, just remember that we should not take everything too seriously. Simply clean your teeth properly on a daily basis and the rest will come automatically. Then you will get back your natural white color.
Whiten Your Teeth By Proper Cleaning
Ever heard of an interdental toothbrush?
See below how to use this powerful cleaning tool.
Why dental floss is so important
Cleaning the interdental spaces is even more important than just brushing your teeth. Using dental floss will remove bacteria that otherwise could cause dental plaque which could become dental calculus which cannot be removed except by the dentist. Many people don’t use dental floss daily or at all and others don’t brush their teeth twice a day. Not paying attention to your interdental spaces can set the preconditions for caries or paradontosis.
How to use dental floss
Take at least 15 inches (40 cm) of dental floss and wrap it around your fingers. I usually wrap it around the middle finger and use my thumbs or index fingers to guide it into the interdental spaces and to pull it on tension. Start on the upper teeth on one side and go all the around. After that to the same on the “ground floor”
The dental floss should have a V-shape around your tooth while moving it back and forth going up. Do the same on the neighboring tooth and then go to the next interdental space.
You can wash the dental floss while using it and rewrap a bit to section that you use. Wash your mouth with water at the end and in between if you want. When you are done throw the floss away. It should not take longer than 1 or two minutes to do one round.
If your interdental spaces are bigger then you can use bigger super-floss. When your gum starts to bleed it signals you that there are bacteria present that easily can get into your blood circles and cause all kinds of inflammation in your body. If the bleeding continues after one week you may want to consult your dentist. But normally it should stop after some treatments.
How often to do?
Dentists recommend to do it twice a day. If you cannot do it that often do it at LEAST once a day. Best time here would be in the evening because when you are sleeping your salivary flow is very low so that you are not washing away any bacteria. But doing it in the morning will be fine as well as long as you are doing it at all.
How to toothbrush properly
The ideal duration is two minutes, so 30 seconds on one side (upper/lower left/right side). This would be 10 seconds on top of your teeth, and 10 seconds for the front and back side.
If you brush longer than necessary or push too strong you can do more harm than good. The pressure on your teeth should equal the weight of an orange (150 grams). Brush your teeth twice a day in the morning and before going to sleep.
Important: Don’t forget to brush your tongue as well. It is also a part of your mouth and touches your teeth all the time, so it makes sense to give it a little brush once in a while. Notice that extensive cleaning is counterproductive. You have also helping bacteria in your mouth that you don’t want to disturb too much.
Pay attention to the kind of toothpaste you are using. Avoid tooth paste with fluorides in it. It is a toxic substance and the often claimed beneficial effects on your teeth are not as good as it would justify the harmful effects on your body. I will write an extra article about it. Other substances to avoid are tricosane, sodium lauryl sulfate, propylene glycol, and diethanolamine.
There are more and more tooth pastes on the market that use natural ingredients and herbs. You can easily make your own toothpaste by mixing coconut oil, baking soda, and a dash of Himalayan salt. Optional you could add essential oil of peppermint which adds a nice flavor and prevents caries.
What is Oil Pulling?
Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic technique that intends to improve your oral hygiene by drawing out toxins and bacteria by swishing a tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth for at least 15 minutes. Push and squeeze it through your teeth. The lipophilic nature of the oil helps washing out otherwise indissoluble substances and prevents them from entering the body. Coconut oil also kills caries causing bacteria. For more information on why oil pulling with coconut oil is so beneficial watch the video below.
After you finish spit it out into the garbage or into the toilet. Don’t swallow it. And don’t spit it in the sink because coconut oil hardens when it cools down below room temperature and can clog your sink.
Coconut oil has many health benefits about which I may write an additional article. You can use it for your skin, to cook, to eat, to make your own beauty products and much more. It is probably one of the healthiest oils that you can have in a huge variety of applications.
For more information about what diseases are caused by poor oral hygiene read this article from Dr. Mercola.
